What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a key component of traditional Chinese medicine that involves inserting very thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate healing and restore balance. The practice dates back over 2,500 years and has been used to address a wide range of physical and mental health concerns. Throughout history, acupuncture has evolved while maintaining its foundational principles of promoting energy flow and overall wellness.

The practice works by targeting the body’s energy pathways, known as meridians, where vital energy, or “qi,” flows. By stimulating these points, acupuncture can help:

  • Improve circulation and blood flow
  • Reduce pain and inflammation
  • Enhance the body’s natural healing abilities
  • Balance physical, emotional, and mental health

Modern research also suggests that acupuncture can trigger the release of endorphins, regulate the nervous system, and support immune function, making it a versatile treatment for both acute and chronic conditions.

Acupuncture Treatment

Acupuncture treatments are designed to address a wide range of health concerns by targeting specific points on the body to restore balance and promote healing. Each session is tailored to the individual’s needs, taking into account their medical history, symptoms, and overall health goals. Licensed acupuncturists create a personalized treatment plan to ensure the most effective results.

Common conditions that acupuncture may help treat include:

  • Pain relief for back pain, joint pain, and arthritis
  • Stress reduction and anxiety management
  • Digestive issues such as bloating, nausea, and irritable bowel syndrome
  • Migraines and chronic headaches

During treatment, the acupuncturist may combine needle therapy with other techniques such as cupping, moxibustion, or gentle massage to enhance the effects. By customizing treatments, acupuncture can provide a holistic approach that supports both physical and mental well-being.

Acupuncture Is Almost Painless

Many first-time patients wonder whether acupuncture is painful. Most people report only minimal discomfort during treatment, with sensations that can include a light pricking, tingling, or a slight pressure at the needle insertion points. The needles used in acupuncture are extremely thin, much finer than standard medical needles, which helps reduce any potential pain.

To help manage any anxiety or discomfort during a session, consider the following tips:

  • Take slow, deep breaths to relax your body and mind.
  • Communicate openly with your acupuncturist about any sensations or concerns.
  • Focus on the calming environment, which often includes soft music and a quiet treatment room.
  • Start with shorter sessions if you are particularly nervous about needles.

Overall, most patients find acupuncture to be a gentle and tolerable experience, with many reporting a sense of relaxation and well-being during and after their session.

Benefits of Acupuncture

Acupuncture offers a wide range of benefits that support physical, mental, and emotional well-being. By stimulating specific points on the body, acupuncture can help restore balance, reduce tension, and promote the body’s natural healing processes. Many patients turn to acupuncture not only for symptom relief but also for overall wellness and preventive care.

Evidence-supported benefits of acupuncture include:

  • Pain relief for conditions such as back pain, arthritis, and migraines
  • Reduction of stress and anxiety levels
  • Improved sleep quality and support for insomnia
  • Enhanced digestion and relief from gastrointestinal issues
  • Support for immune system function and overall vitality

In addition to these physical benefits, acupuncture can promote emotional and mental clarity, helping patients feel more relaxed, focused, and balanced after treatments. Regular sessions may contribute to long-term health improvements and a better quality of life.

How Acupuncture Works

Acupuncture works by stimulating specific points on the body to trigger natural physiological responses. When needles are inserted, they interact with the nervous system, helping to release neurotransmitters and endorphins that reduce pain and promote relaxation. This stimulation can also improve blood flow, reduce inflammation, and support the body’s overall healing processes.

From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture focuses on balancing the body’s energy, or “qi,” which flows through pathways called meridians. Blockages or imbalances in this energy flow are believed to contribute to illness or discomfort. By targeting these points, acupuncture helps restore harmony and encourages the body to function optimally.

Key mechanisms of how acupuncture works include:

  • Stimulation of nerves to modulate pain signals
  • Improved circulation to enhance oxygen and nutrient delivery
  • Release of endorphins and other natural chemicals for pain relief and relaxation
  • Regulation of energy flow according to traditional Chinese medicine principles

This combination of physiological and energetic effects makes acupuncture a versatile approach to supporting both physical and mental health.

Acupuncture Appointment

Scheduling an acupuncture appointment is simple and can often be done online or by calling a licensed acupuncturist’s office. Your first appointment typically begins with a consultation where the practitioner reviews your medical history, current symptoms, lifestyle, and health goals. This initial session helps the acupuncturist develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs.

During your first appointment, it is helpful to ask questions such as:

  • What conditions can acupuncture help treat in my situation
  • How many sessions are likely needed for optimal results
  • What techniques or additional therapies may be used
  • Any potential side effects or aftercare recommendations

Preparation tips for first-time patients include:

  • Wearing loose, comfortable clothing to allow easy access for needle placement
  • Eating a light meal beforehand to prevent discomfort
  • Bringing a list of medications, supplements, or health concerns
  • Arriving a few minutes early to complete any necessary paperwork

Being prepared and informed can help make your first acupuncture appointment a comfortable and positive experience.

Acupuncture Covered (Insurance & Costs)

Three Treasures Acupuncture is an Out-of-Network (OON) acupuncture provider. Insurance coverage varies by plan, so understanding individual benefits is an important part of preparing for treatment.

When a first appointment is scheduled, insurance information is reviewed and verified by the billing team. Once coverage is confirmed, all visits are submitted to the insurance company in a timely manner.

If an out-of-network deductible has not yet been met, patients are responsible for paying out of pocket for treatments until the deductible is satisfied. For example, if the deductible is $800 and only $400 has been met, payment is required until the full $800 deductible is reached. Afterward, payments typically transition to co-insurance.

The only insurance plans accepted for out-of-network billing are:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS)
  • United Healthcare
  • Aetna

Please note that BCBS is managed differently than United Healthcare and Aetna in terms of reimbursement.

If a plan does not include out-of-network acupuncture coverage, payment is due at the self-pay rate on the day of treatment.

Three Treasures Acupuncture does not accept Medicare, as acupuncture is not currently covered by Medicare except for low back pain when provided by an acupuncture MD. In some cases, supplemental insurance plans may reimburse for out-of-network acupuncture services.

Medicaid is not accepted, as Medicaid does not reimburse for out-of-network care.

Insurance policies can be difficult to interpret, and coverage varies widely. Patients are encouraged to call to discuss all insurance questions, as navigating benefits can be challenging.

Acupuncture Treat (Conditions Treated)

Acupuncture can be used to treat a wide range of physical, mental, and emotional conditions. Licensed acupuncturists develop personalized treatment plans based on individual needs, allowing patients to experience targeted relief and improved overall wellness. Many people turn to acupuncture as a complementary therapy alongside conventional medical treatments for chronic or persistent health issues.

Common conditions that acupuncture may help treat include:

  • Chronic pain, such as back pain, neck pain, and arthritis
  • Stress-related disorders, including anxiety, depression, and insomnia
  • Infertility and reproductive health concerns
  • Allergies and seasonal sensitivities
  • Digestive issues such as irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, and nausea
  • Migraines and tension headaches

By addressing both the underlying causes and the symptoms, acupuncture aims to restore balance and support the body’s natural healing processes. Regular sessions can improve overall health while reducing reliance on medications for certain conditions.

Cover Acupuncture (Precautions & Safety)

Acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed by a licensed and trained practitioner. To ensure a safe experience, it is important to follow recommended precautions and be aware of any personal health conditions that may require special attention.

Key safety considerations include:

  • Only receiving treatment from a licensed acupuncturist who follows proper hygiene and sterilization protocols
  • Informing your practitioner of any medical conditions, medications, or pregnancy status
  • Avoiding acupuncture if you have certain bleeding disorders or use blood-thinning medications without medical approval
  • Reporting any unusual sensations, pain, or discomfort during a session

By understanding these precautions and choosing a qualified professional, patients can safely experience the benefits of acupuncture while minimizing risks.

Other Treatments & Dry Needling

Acupuncture is often part of a broader, integrative approach to wellness that may include select complementary therapies such as cupping and herbal medicine to support treatment outcomes. These therapies are rooted in traditional East Asian medicine and are used thoughtfully based on individual needs.

Cupping therapy may be used to help release muscle tension, improve circulation, and support pain relief by encouraging blood flow to targeted areas.

Herbal medicine may be recommended to support internal balance and overall health, including digestive function, hormonal regulation, and immune support.

These therapies are optional and discussed as part of a personalized care plan, allowing patients to make informed decisions about what best supports their health goals.

Acupuncture is a safe and effective therapy that supports physical, mental, and emotional well-being. At Three Treasures Acupuncture, every patient receives a personalized treatment plan designed to address their unique health needs. Sessions are unhurried, with minimal discomfort, and delivered in a calm, focused environment to promote relaxation and healing. Working with a licensed acupuncturist ensures professional, attentive care, and being prepared and informed helps create a positive, restorative experience.
